The brief

Short answer

Garage door repair is emergency demand, so win the Map Pack and Local Services Ads, pass Google's Advanced Verification, and answer every call live. Floor coating and storage are planned purchases sold at an in-home estimate, so lean on photos, reviews and Cooling-Off paperwork. Set a cost-per-lead cap per service before buying clicks.

  • Fact 01Google requires garage door services advertising in the United States to pass Advanced Verification, which includes license and registration checks and a recorded video interview.9
  • Fact 02Google's Advanced Verification policy bars service call fees and minimum or starting prices from garage door text ads, and bars discounts in text ads for emergency or repair services.9
  • Fact 03HomeAdvisor's cost guides put average garage door repair at $265 and average garage door replacement at $1,231.2
  • Fact 04The FTC Cooling-Off Rule excludes repair or maintenance visits the buyer requested for their personal property, but not the sale of additional goods or services beyond the parts needed for that repair.14
  • Fact 05Since January 1, 2025, California lets unlicensed people do minor work only under $1,000, with no permit required and no employees.16

“Garage company” covers three different businesses that happen to share a room. Garage door repair is emergency work: a broken spring traps a car, the owner searches on a phone, and the first company that answers usually wins. Floor coating and storage systems are planned upgrades sold at an in-home estimate, closer to remodeling than to repair. Each needs its own lead math and its own channels. This page covers how owners search, what each kind of lead is worth, the extra rules Google applies to garage door advertisers, state contractor rules, and a 90-day plan.

How do homeowners find a garage company today?

The search data is dominated by doors, not floors. Across 1,967 distinct garage search terms with at least 100 monthly searches, the median top-of-page bid estimate (high range) is $8.23 and the 90th percentile is $38.861. The top terms are repair intent: “garage door repair,” “garage door opener repair” and “garage door repair service near me” each sit in Google’s 100K-1M monthly range, with top-of-page bid estimates (high range) of $67.07 to $81.911. “Emergency garage door repair” sits in the 10K-100K range at $109.11, the highest bid in the national top list1. Keyword Planner groups close variants, so “garage door fix” and “garage door refurbishment” share the same range and bid as “garage door repair”1.

Spring repair is its own pocket. Spring replacement terms appear among the top terms in 10 of the 48 state reports, with Arizona’s “garage spring repair” at a $103.21 top-of-page estimate1. Floor coating is much smaller in search. Epoxy and coating terms reach the top-term list in only 6 of the 48 state reports, with top-of-page bid estimates from $4.45 (North Dakota, “garage floor coating”) to $18.83 (Tennessee), and Massachusetts showing “epoxy coating garage floor” in the 1K-10K range at $13.731. Storage and cabinet terms barely register in the state top lists1.

The pattern tells you how to market each line:

  • Doors: demand already exists. Your job is to be found and answer first.
  • Floor coating and storage: search demand is thin. Most buyers decide after seeing a neighbor’s garage, a show booth or a social post, then search for a company name or “near me.” Photos, reviews and referrals create the demand that search later captures.

California, Texas and Florida are the three broadest state markets by distinct garage search terms, and state median bids range from $4.45 in North Dakota to $17.85 in Arkansas1. The tables on this page show your state. These are Google’s top-of-page bid estimates (high range), not cost per click or cost per lead.

03Chapter3 min

What is a garage customer worth?

Start with sourced job values. Most come from cost guides published by HomeAdvisor, which is owned by Angi, so treat them as vendor data and replace them with your own invoices.

Table 03.1
Job (national)Typical costSource
Garage door repair, average$265 (most $155 to $379)HomeAdvisor 20262
Spring replacement$180 to $350HomeAdvisor 20262

Garage organization, average$1,332 (most $505 to $2,164)HomeAdvisor 20265
Garage renovation or conversion, normal range$6,003 to $27,348HomeAdvisor26

Two things stand out. A repair ticket is small, so a repair lead is worth little unless it leads to a replacement or a repeat customer. And the Cost vs. Value report estimates that a garage door replacement recoups 268% of its cost at resale, the highest of any project in its 2025 national table6. That is a strong line for door replacement ads and estimates, as long as you cite it.

Close rates vary by source. A common rule of thumb is that a well-answered repair call books more than half the time, and that an in-home coating estimate closes around a third of the time. Treat those as starting assumptions and replace them with your own numbers within 90 days.

Worked example 1: what can you pay for a door repair lead?

Inputs are illustrative except where cited:

  • Average repair ticket: $2652
  • Gross margin on repairs: 55% (illustrative)
  • Calls that book a visit: 60% (illustrative)
  • Repair visits that also buy a new door: 10% (illustrative), at $1,231 average3 and 35% margin (illustrative)

Gross profit per repair: $265 × 0.55 = $146. Repair profit per lead: $146 × 0.60 = $87. Upsell profit per booked visit: $1,231 × 0.35 × 0.10 = $43. Per lead: $43 × 0.60 = $26. Total gross profit per lead: about $113.

If you cap marketing at one third of gross profit, the most you can pay per repair lead is about $38.

Now test paid search. A useful decision rule: the break-even click-to-lead rate equals the cost per click divided by your maximum cost per lead. If you paid close to the $81.91 top-of-page estimate for “garage door repair”1, you would need more than 200% of clicks to become leads, which is impossible. At the national median bid of $8.231, you need about 22% of clicks to call. That is reachable only with a fast mobile page and a click-to-call button. The conclusion for most small door companies: the Map Pack and Local Services Ads come first, paid search on head terms comes last, and the repair lead pays only if you capture the replacement and the repeat visit.

Worked example 2: what can you pay for a floor coating lead?

  • Average epoxy floor: $2,5264
  • Gross margin: 50% (illustrative)
  • Lead to in-home estimate: 60% (illustrative)
  • Estimate to signed job: 35% (illustrative)
  • Coating jobs that add storage: 25% (illustrative), at $1,332 average5 and 40% margin (illustrative)

Gross profit per coating job: $2,526 × 0.50 = $1,263. Lead-to-job rate: 0.60 × 0.35 = 21%. Coating profit per lead: $1,263 × 0.21 = $265. Storage add-on per job: $1,332 × 0.40 × 0.25 = $133. Per lead: $133 × 0.21 = $28. Total gross profit per lead: about $293. One third of that is a cap near $98 per lead.

At the Massachusetts estimate of $13.73 for “epoxy coating garage floor”1, the break-even click-to-lead rate is $13.73 / $98 = 14%. If your landing page converts 10%, each lead costs about $137 and loses money. Fix the page, raise the attach rate on storage, or keep the budget on photo-driven channels.

04Chapter5 min

Where do garage door and floor coating leads come from?

1. Google Business Profile and the Map Pack

Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help ranking11. For a door company, the profile is the storefront: hours, a real phone answered live, and photos of trucks, crews and finished doors. Service-area businesses should hide their address, keep the service area within about two hours of driving time of their base, and not list a virtual office (a co-working office qualifies only with signage, staff and customers received there during business hours)10. Use your real business name with no added keywords10. Coating companies should post a finished floor every week, with the town in the description.

2. Local Services Ads

“Garage door services” is a US Local Services Ads category7. It also carries extra friction: garage door services advertising in the United States must pass Advanced Verification9, and Google’s pre-badge ads, which let some trades receive leads while onboarding finishes, are not available for garage door services7. Advanced Verification reviews state registrations and professional licenses, looks for evidence of unauthorized or misleading business practices, and includes a recorded video interview with the owner. Google may ask for re-verification every 12 months9.

You pay per valid lead, and a missed call during business hours counts when the caller stays on the line more than 20 seconds8. For an emergency trade, that rule alone justifies an answering plan for every open hour. Google is moving Local Services Ads into Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals, starting with select home and storefront service advertisers in August 2026 and reaching service-area businesses without storefronts in late 2026; weekly budgets become daily averages, and an existing Google Verified badge carries over25.

Floor coating has no category of its own. The list includes “Flooring services”7; check in your account whether coating work fits it before you plan around it.

3. Google Ads rules that apply only to garage door companies

The Advanced Verification policy covers Google Ads as well as Local Services9. It sets rules many owners only learn after a disapproval:

  • No service call fees or minimum or starting prices in text ads9.
  • No discounts or coupons in text ads that promote emergency or repair services9.
  • No claims of rapid response times that are unlikely to always be true9.
  • Any prices shown must include all fees and taxes; variable prices need a typical range9.
  • An offer like “New garage doors installed for $499” needs details on the door type and limits9.
  • If you mention a warranty or guarantee, the same page must link to its terms and claim instructions9.

These rules exist because the category has a fraud problem. The BBB warns about garage door companies that use multiple generic names, fake addresses and low service-call fees followed by inflated repairs, and notes that they can appear at the top of search results12. Honest companies benefit from saying the opposite plainly: your legal name, your real address, your technician’s photo, and a written estimate before work.

4. Organic SEO and your website

Build one page per service (spring replacement, opener repair, new doors, floor coating, storage systems) and one page per town you actually serve. Publish real price ranges. Coating buyers compare systems, so explain the difference between a DIY epoxy kit and a professional system honestly; one popular DIY kit says it is for covered garages only and needs three days before vehicle traffic23. That is a fair comparison point, not a scare tactic.

Use the break-even rule above before you launch. Bid on long-tail service terms (“garage door spring replacement [town]”, “garage floor coating near me”) rather than “garage door,” which draws 100K-1M searches at a $22.88 estimate1 and mixes in buyers shopping for a product. Exclude “DIY,” “kit,” “paint,” retailer names, and opener brand searches if you do not service that brand.

6. Lead marketplaces

Angi’s 10-K says US revenue includes fees pros pay for consumer matches, regardless of whether the pro ends up providing the service13. Its average monthly active pros fell to 122,000 in 2025 from 152,000 in 2024, and it says US network revenue fell 72% after it implemented homeowner choice in January 202513. Marketplaces can fill gaps for coating and storage installers whose search demand is thin, provided you call back within minutes and track every lead to a signed job.

7. Referrals, builders and repeat work

Doors and openers wear out, so every repair customer is a future replacement. A tune-up reminder at 12 months costs little. Coating and storage companies do well with home builders, real estate agents preparing listings, and neighbor marketing after each job (yard sign with the owner’s permission, door hangers on the street). Garage conversions are a natural referral to and from addition builders, at $6,003 to $27,348 a project26.

What licensing and advertising rules affect garage company marketing?

Rules vary by state. Examples from primary sources:

  • California: Licensed contractors must put the license number in all advertising, contracts and bids, cannot advertise outside their classification, and cannot mention bonding in ads. The first-offense penalty for a missing number is $100 to $1,00015. Since January 1, 2025, unlicensed people may do minor work only under $1,000, only if no permit is required and no one is employed, and their ads must say they are not licensed16. An average coating job4 is well over that line. Doors fall under the C-61/D-28 “Doors, Gates and Activating Devices” subcategory17.
  • New Jersey: “Home improvement” expressly includes doors, garages and attached or inlaid floor coverings18. Registered contractors must show their registration number on all advertisements, business documents, contracts and consumer correspondence in the state19.
  • Maryland: “Home improvement” includes repair or replacement of a residence or an adjacent structure, and lists garages on adjacent land20. A contractor license is required to act as a contractor, and a salesperson or contractor license is required to sell a home improvement21.

Federal rules also apply:

  • FTC Cooling-Off Rule: A sale at the buyer’s home of $25 or more is covered even when the buyer invited you14. Visits the buyer requested to repair or maintain their personal property are excluded, but extra goods or services sold during the visit beyond needed replacement parts are not14. A new door sold on a repair visit is therefore likely covered. Whether a requested door repair itself fits the exclusion is a question for your attorney; giving the notice costs little. Covered sales need a contract in the same language as the sales pitch, two copies of the cancellation notice, and refunds within 10 business days of a cancellation14.
  • Opener safety standard: The federal safety standard for automatic residential garage door operators applies to operators made on or after January 1, 199322. Older operators were not required to meet it, which gives technicians a factual point to raise when recommending replacement.
  • Financing ads: Stating a monthly payment, number of payments or down payment triggers Regulation Z disclosures of the down payment, repayment terms and APR24.

This is not legal advice. Check your state’s contractor board before you change ads or contracts.

06Chapter1 min

When is garage demand seasonal?

No public monthly series of garage door or coating demand was found for this page, so check Google Trends for your own terms and market. The constraint that is documented is temperature. One widely sold DIY epoxy kit says to apply at 60 to 85 degrees F air temperature with humidity below 80%, not to apply if temperatures will drop below 65 degrees for 24 to 48 hours, and to keep the floor at 55 degrees or higher23. Professional systems differ, so read your own data sheet. In cold markets, use winter for estimates, reviews and booking spring installs, not for heavy click spend.

07Chapter1 min

What mistakes do garage companies make with lead generation?

  • Pricing in text ads. “$39 service call” gets garage door ads disapproved under Advanced Verification9. Put honest ranges on the website instead.
  • Inconsistent business identity. Different names, numbers or addresses across listings look like the scam pattern the BBB describes12 and slow verification9.
  • Missing calls. A missed call during business hours can still be a charged Local Services lead if the caller stays on the line more than 20 seconds8. Route every open hour to a live person.
  • Bidding on head terms. Repair head terms carry bids far above what a $265 ticket supports12. Run the break-even math first.
  • No upsell process. The repair ticket is small. Without an inspection checklist and a written replacement quote, most of the lead’s value is left behind.
  • Treating coating like repair. Coating buyers need photos, a sample and a written scope. Speed matters, but trust closes the sale.
  • No cancellation paperwork. In-home coating, storage and door sales are covered by the Cooling-Off Rule14.

08Chapter2 min

A 90-day plan for a small garage company

Plan 08.A / Days 1 to 90 3 phases

Days 1 to 30Foundation

  1. Split last year’s jobs into repair, door replacement, coating and storage. Calculate average ticket, gross margin and close rate for each.
  2. Set a maximum cost per lead for each line using the worked examples.
  3. Make your legal name, phone and address identical on your website, Business Profile and every directory10.
  4. Add your license or registration number to ads, trucks and estimates where your state requires it1519.
  5. Door companies: start the Local Services Ads and Advanced Verification process now, since it includes a recorded interview9.

Days 31 to 60Demand capture

  1. Set up live answering for every open hour, with a script that books a time on the first call.
  2. Build service pages and town pages with real price ranges and project photos.
  3. Launch a small exact-match campaign on long-tail service terms only, sized to your cost-per-lead cap.
  4. Ask every customer from the last two years for a review, and reply to each one.

Days 61 to 90Value and pipeline

  1. Add a written door-and-opener inspection to every repair visit, with a replacement quote when warranted.
  2. Coating and storage: offer a bundled quote on every estimate and track the attach rate.
  3. Send a 12-month tune-up reminder to past repair customers.
  4. Compare cost per booked job by channel. Cut the worst, add budget to the best.

09Chapter1 min

Bottom line

  • Garage search is mostly door repair, with top-of-page estimates up to $109.11 for emergency terms1; floor coating search is thin, so photos and referrals create that demand.
  • A $265 repair lead2 supports only a small cost per lead unless you capture replacements and repeat visits. Use the break-even click rate before buying clicks.
  • Garage door advertisers must pass Google’s Advanced Verification and follow its pricing, discount and response-time rules9.
  • In-home coating, storage and door sales need Cooling-Off paperwork, even when the homeowner invited you14.
  • Put your license or registration number wherever your state requires it1519.

10Questions owners ask5 questions

Questions owners ask

Q01Why can't I get my garage door company into Local Services Ads quickly?

Garage door services is one of the few US categories that must pass Google's Advanced Verification. Google reviews state registrations and licenses, looks for evidence of misleading practices and records a video interview with the owner. Pre-badge ads, which let some trades get leads while checks finish, are not offered for garage door services. Make your legal name, phone and address match everywhere before you apply.

Q02Can I advertise a $49 service call for garage door repair?

Not in Google text ads. Google's Advanced Verification policy for garage door services bars service call fees and minimum or starting prices from text ads, and bars discounts in text ads for emergency or repair services. Any price you show elsewhere must include all fees, and coupon offers need a description of what is included and excluded.

Q03Does the 3-day cancellation rule apply to garage door repair?

The FTC Cooling-Off Rule excludes a visit the buyer requested to repair or maintain their personal property. But if, during that visit, you sell a new door, opener or other goods beyond the parts needed for the repair, that extra sale is not excluded. Floor coating and storage sales signed at the home are generally covered when they are $25 or more, even when the homeowner invited you. Ask an attorney how the repair exclusion applies to work on a door that is part of the house.

Q04Is it worth buying floor coating leads from a marketplace?

It can be, if you can price the lead against your numbers. Angi's 10-K says its US lead revenue includes fees pros pay for consumer matches whether or not they get the job. Work out your gross profit per lead first (the worked example on this page lands near $290 for a coating lead at illustrative close rates), cap spend at a share of it, and track each source to signed jobs.

Q05When is the busy season for garage floor coatings?

No public seasonal series for coating demand was found. Product limits do shape the calendar: one widely sold DIY epoxy kit says to apply only at 60 to 85 degrees F air temperature, with a 55 degree minimum floor temperature. Check your own system's data sheet, then plan cold-month marketing around booking spring jobs.
